Ethereum and Web 3.0 is not only just about decentralized finance!!!
More recently, the Dopefi bros have provided themselves as a constant source of annoyance on my twitter feed as they chant and dance around the decentralized finance campfire. Rah rah rah—#BROFI, #DOPEFI, #BUIDL. Lol, Okay. I maybe exaggerating here.
Credit due is due where it is earned and yes. There is a lot of great work being done in that space. Despite this, I believe there is a growing mis-attitude and a sense of over glamorisation towards decentralized finance in respect to Web 3.0—Something we should be careful with.
I believe that the term ‘decentralized finance‘ could enable a sense of close mindedness around Web 3.0 and Ethereum—with many now championing it as a new age world financial engine, it could distract many from what really matters. And while it certainly can become the new world computer for open finance, we should also be extremely cautious about how Web 3.0 is not just about decentralized finance. And instead remember that Web 3.0 is about an internet of open value.
While finance is about value, value is not just about finance.
This is a distinction we must hold dear to us if we want to remain equanimous and receptive of what we haven’t yet fully comprehended in this space. Labels hold us back as they are inherently judgement, and while they provide a sense of finality to objects and ideas. When it comes to describing ideas that are truely original and most importantly, fully yet to be formed—pre-existing paradigms hinder our ability to see the truth of what is in front of us. While I think open finance and #DeFi is a perfectly fine term practically speaking, without awareness—I can see how it can not only hold us back intellectually but also deprive us of an wholistic vision of Web 3.0 ~
We understand finance. And decentralized finance in Web 3.0, is providing real distinct advantages today. Hence, why I think there such an infatuation with DeFI in this community. The value of DeFi is tangible and easily grasped. There is a sense of clarity unlike the land of crypto gaming, blockchain enabled art, NFTs and token curated registries—areas typically shrouded in ambiguity. DeFi just seems to feels like a safer bet. Right?
While that clarity is certainly a positive sign of progress within the community, the very belief in that very clarity can also make us blind. DeFi is making money and value more efficient in Web 3.0, however in the end—it doesn’t necessarily generate more value. We still haven’t really properly figured out how to do that. We need to be looking outwards challenging ourselves to discover what hasn’t be discovered.
Importance is not defined by clarity and safety of an idea. I believe it is safe to say that we have only begun to properly begin to understand how Web 3.0 unlocks value transfer, creation and curation, in means that were never available previously. But despite the ecosystem’s nascent stage, we are in indeed making ground through experiments such as Cent.co, SuperRare and Kickback. Inch by inch and month by month, we are learning from experiments that are changing our understanding of what is possible. It’s all incredibly incremental.
I urge others to feel comfortable with ambiguity and the unknown, for that is what will propel the progression in this space. Who knows that the future entails, but I do know that it will be more than just decentralized finance.
ps. Thanks for enduring this rant. I will try to return to the writing about the much beloved world of Cryptopia and more about Doge Republic next week. Cheers.
